Native trees within conifer blocks......

This site is managed by the Forestry Commission Scotland as a conventional conifer plantation. The conifers have been felled, but the native species have been retained. Although this site is being replanted with conifers, space will be left around the retained trees, and they will be able to spread by natural regeneration in to these gaps. In this way, the next rotation of trees will have a higher proportion of native broadleaves than the previous rotation. Native trees do not just exist in completely native woodlands, native species within conifer plantations fulfill a very useful function, and are in fact a very substantial contribution to our overall resource of native trees.
